The two best tennis players in the world, Rafael Nadal and Serena Williams, are set to add to their already considerable fan base as part of the AO Blitz.

Tennis Australia’s national tennis participation competition, the AO Blitz will align all main draw players, 128 men and 128 women, with 256 towns across Australia.

The No.1 town, to be announced on Tuesday 7 January, will have their choice of the top seed from either the men’s or women’s draw, either Rafael Nadal or Serena Williams, effectively becoming a whole-town cheer squad for their nominated player.

The towns with top tennis credentials and in line to pick up the No.1 seeds include Kendall in New South Wales, Cooroy in Queensland, Parkes in New South Wales and Moorooduc in Victoria.

There has been a fierce rivalry between the top four towns during the interactive online competition and with that, last minute changes to the top spots. With final positions yet to be determined, we have Mooroduc scraping into fourth place, only just behind Parkes. Kendall has held a comfortable lead for a number of weeks and boasts the highest tennis power overall*.

As part of the AO Blitz initiative 103 towns staged community participation days, involving 73,000+ attendees, and more than 35,000 challenges were completed in the online competition.

‘It’s an amazing campaign that has really brought local communities together,” said Craig Morris, Tennis Australia’s Direction of Participation.

‘Getting involved in the AO Blitz and having one of the world’s best players  representing your town is the reward for the thousands of people that got involved and completed more than 35,000 tennis-themed challenges. The incentive here for communities is to have their town represented on the world stage. It’s very exciting.’ continued Morris.

Over the next few days the AO Blitz team will validate the last challenges and finalise the town leaderboard in time for the first prize draw on Monday 6 January.

Winners will be announced on Tuesday 7 January.

The initial AO Blitz prize breakdown is as follows:

  • Brand new Kia Sportage car will be won by an individual entrant through a random draw
  • Australian Open finals tickets will be awarded to the man and woman who lead the individual points challenge
  •  Schools with the most points and most registered players will win an installation of two MLC Tennis Hot Shots mini-courts
  • The tennis club with the overall highest number of points will win a special prize package, as will the highest ranked clubs in each state and territory.

The two Australian towns aligned with the eventual Australian Open singles winners will host an AO Blitz spectacular tennis party early in 2014.
