Paul Henri Mathieu

Frenchman Paul-Henri Mathieu advanced to the second round of Men’s singles qualifying with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Australian teenager Marc Polmans on Wednesday morning.

Mathieu gained early control of the contest against the Australian wildcard, claiming the opening game before breaking Polmans’ opening service game on court six.

The pair traded three successive breaks of serve in the first set, as Mathieu established a 4-1 advantage before prevailing 6-2 in 38 minutes.

Mathieu’s first serve proved too strong for the 16-year old, claiming 75 percent of points on his serve during the opening set of the contest.

It was a trend which continued in the second set, as the seven-time Australian Open participant gained ascendancy from the outset to open a 3-0 lead, before winning 6-1.

In total the No.12 qualifying seed blasted five aces, with a fastest serve of 201kmh.

Polmans showed moments of poise, and tested his No.128-ranked opponent in stages, but was outclassed by the 31-year-old despite less unforced errors throughout the match.

The Victorian teenager had chances to push the contest further, but was frustrated by his own inability to make the most of those chances as he slumped to a straight-sets defeat in the biggest match of his career.

Last summer Polmans competed in the Boys’ singles event, reaching the second round.

Four-time ATP event winner Mathieu awaits a second round qualifying clash with the winner of the match between Jimmy Wang and James McGee.

Mathieu is yet to meet either of his potential opponents in a previous match.
